The One Who Gives Rest

In Broken Vessels, Windows to Grace

Day 5 – This day was a Sunday and I found myself exhausted. My eyelids kept dipping as much as I tried to keep them open during service. I even chewed gum, the refreshing peppermint cooling my tongue and waking me up. It was one of those mornings where, as nice as it was to see friends and worship, I looked forward to coming home, putting on more comfortable clothing, and cuddling up on the couch with a book or my laptop.

We went home and had a light lunch. I tried typing up a note, but wound up definitely needing a nap. Dreams that I couldn’t remember took me miles away during a sweet and sound sleep. I woke up to the sound of a movie my husband was watching. Sunday afternoon naps can be so refreshing. However, that day I wasn’t feeling well, so I was groggy when I awoke rather than refreshed.

But resting on a Sunday reminded me of the grace of God. He offers rest for the weary. Jesus said, Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” He takes the burden of sin and offers forgiveness. And in the Old Testament He commanded that His people rest physically, taking a whole day off each week.

He gives rest to the spirit to give us new life and physical rest to renew us. Jesus is in the restoration business! (Please Tweet and share.)

I feel weary but also thankful for relationship with Christ Jesus. Sunday is reserved for church worship, yet I have made Saturday my personal Sabbath. I still try to perfect it by not shopping, rather just attending or doing things that are spiritual and comforting.

Jackie, thank you so much for stopping by. It’s good to set aside time for rest.
Sometimes Sundays don’t seem so restful when we’re running to church or connected
social outings, so I understand how you feel.
