Day 13 of 40 Days of Grace – Finding the Speed of Grace
Day 13 – Hurtling along the highway in my car at 70+ miles an hour, I take for granted as the traffic passes at an even faster rate, or someone impatiently comes near my bumper, that they are all driving carefully. The truth is that we’re all distracted at some time or another. There is an interesting or humorous billboard on the side of the road. Or there’s an annoying one and the anger starts to boil within.
Even hands-free cell phone use has a learning curve. If you’re not on the phone, you could be listening to the radio and distracted by a report. I remember one time hearing about a baby left by the side of the road. I was so upset I missed my exit!
When it snows we have to drive more slowly, with a more concentrated effort, avoiding the invisible patches of black ice. Shortly before Christmas I was in an accident completely out of my control. While I wasn’t on a major road, it was still very scary. No matter how slowly I drove and slid the gears into neutral I wasn’t going to be able to stop at the corner. The Lord gave me the presence of mind to at least turn the best I could to the right and I avoided a much worse accident.
While there are plenty of car accidents, the wonder is why there aren’t more. God kept me safe today as I drove for over an hour, combined, to and from my destiny. Since the accident I am even more aware of God’s grace in keeping me safe. Thank you, Lord.
