Day 14 of 40 Days of Grace – What Do You Hear in the Quiet Places?
Day 14 – For as long as most of us have the gift of hearing we are blessed. Is there anything nicer than hearing the words, “I love you” from a significant other or your own child? Beautiful music which may soothe heart and soul after a stressful day or week, is lovely to the ears.
Sometimes I enjoy the sound of quiet. Yes, though that sounds like an oxymoron, a break from the cacophony of the noisy world is a respite I enjoy. These are the times I can be comforted that I am in a warm house as the wind whistles around the outside corners of the building. The house itself settles and the cat purrs in my lap.
It’s nice to get away from loud news reports on the radio or television, the clever quips of a situation comedy, or car crashes in an action film. Even being away from the stream of motor traffic can be more peaceful.
In the silence I can actually hear myself think and process thoughts better without distraction. Occasionally I hear the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. What a gift! What grace! I don’t stop often enough to listen. Sure, I read scripture, I pray, but do I really listen for the voice of the Lord? Not often enough.
