How Sandra Merville Hart Finds God’s Guidance for Her Writing Every Day

In Author, Books, History, Let's Chat, Writing

Sandra Merville Hart, finalist in the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award Contest for her book, A Stranger on My Land, is a history buff and fellow LPC Books author. She writes a popular new blog called Historical Nibbles.

Her desire to seek God’s guidance for her busy days of writing and marketing was a good reminder for me. I hope you’ll learn something new from reading about Sandra’s writing journey today.

Welcome, Sandra! Please tell us about your writing journey. How did it start?

A love for reading grew from weekly library visits with my third-grade class. A desire to write books led me to write a mystery when in sixth-grade. My parents didn’t really want me become a writer and discouraged me. I let the dream go.

The stories never stopped coming throughout the years. An opportunity to write and share devotional thoughts about weekly choir songs reignited the dream.

What made you decide to write inspirational fiction? And more specifically historicals?

I am a Christian. I love to write stories that have hope, even though bad things happen.

It was an easy decision to write historical novels. My tenth-grade history teacher sparked a love for history that never died. I like to learn something new about the time period when I read this genre, so I research the historical aspects to hopefully find some lesser-known facts to include in my novels. I enjoy hearing readers say, “I didn’t know about that,” or “I learned something new.”

How has God guided you through this process?

Writing is a journey. I pray for His guidance, especially when I am writing a novel. I ask Him to give me His story and the courage to write that story His way.

Yet writing books isn’t the only task on a novelist’s plate. It seems that my plate is always full—no matter how much I get done, there is always more to do. Sometimes I create a daunting To-Do list and then pray, “Show me which task to tackle first.” Often within a few minutes, I find myself working on something that was further down on my list. Yet when I finished, I knew what I needed to do next.

God hears us when we pray, even if He doesn’t answer the way we hoped.

That inspires me, Sandra! I often feel myself overwhelmed and like the work is never done.

Do you have any scriptures you’d like to share that have inspired you?

I’ve been on a blog tour for the past 6 weeks and have been asked this a few times. I don’t believe I’ve shared the same scripture twice. The scripture that came to mind when you asked was Psalm 139:1—O Lord, you searched me and you know me.

I love this because it shows that God took the time to get to know us. He spent time discovering our likes and dislikes. He knows what hurts us and what makes us laugh.

And He loves us.

Amen to that! What would you like to tell us about your latest release, Rebel in My House?

A Rebel in My House is set during the turbulent Battle of Gettysburg. The townspeople lived through a nightmare that extended months beyond the battle. This novel gives a glimpse of that suffering through the eyes of a Gettysburg seamstress. A Confederate soldier caught behind enemy lines after retreat needs her help. Sheltering him ushers in more difficulties than she ever imagined. Lines become blurred as her feelings for him grow. Loyalties threaten to divide them as Confederates seize the town.

Both have made promises to family members.

Some promises are impossible to keep.

This sounds fabulous, Sandra! I’ve visited Gettysburg and found it a moving experience. Thank you for sharing with us about your writing journey and for taking the time to be a guest on my blog this week.
