How Jane Jenkins Herlong Flip-Flops Mess-ups Into Humor!

In Author, Books, Branding, Let's Chat, Lifestyle, Writing

Jane Jenkins Herlong is a fellow Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas author and an Amazon bestselling author, in addition! After I read her hope-filled biography I really looked forward to having her as a guest and learning more about her writing. Her writing story in uplifting and inspirational. I hope you will be encouraged as you read it.

Welcome, Jane! Please tell us about your writing journey. How did it start?

I began writing for our local newspaper and folks would stop me in the grocery store and make comments about my humor. As a professional humorist, I used some of the stories in the newspaper from my first book, “Bare Feet to High Heels” which is a self-published book that I sold in the back of the room. Most speakers have books to sell.

My second book was in memory of my sister who had breast cancer.  The book is entitled, “What Ta-Tas Teach Us.” This book provides wise stories and quotes of how we, as women are influenced by our anatomy. It has some great stories and it is beautifully illustrated.

Bury Me With My Pearls is a tribute to my mother. This book came about after I attended the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference and met Eddie Jones at Lighthouse Publishing and Les Stobbe who became my agent.  The “Pearls” book did so well that I decided to try to get a book deal with a major publisher.  Les pitched the book to many publishers and we were rejected, but The Hachette Book Group signed on. Some of Hachette’s authors are Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen and Newt Gingrich.  God answered my prayers!

2)Your last book, Bury Me With My Pearls was a double-reward winner. Congratulations! What made you decide to write inspirational non-fiction?

I have a passion for helping my audience members and readers live successfully above their circumstances. I had to learn how to “pass my past,” so my latest book, Rhinestones on My Flip-Flops addressed how to have a healthy future with a sense of humor!

And especially your latest release, Rhinestones on My Flip-Flops: Choosing Extravagant Joy in the Midst of Everyday Mess-Ups? What made you decide to write this one?

Every emotion and issue in the book addresses a battle I have fought; deception, rejection, stress, moving ahead of God’s plans, middle-age issues, and refusing to trust God’s timing. I highlight iconic biblical women and at the end of each chapter, note their flip-flops and sparkle and shine moments.  Also included is the big take-a-way of how we can learn from them and sparkle and shine through it all.  All of this is written with humor from my own mess-ups.

I’m sure that is a blessing to all who read it because we all need to find humor in our own mess-ups!

TWEET THIS: Humor makes the message stick-@JaneHerlong #bookgiveaway Rhinestones on my Flip-Flops!

How has God guided you through this process?

As I write, I seek wisdom to connect my humor with biblical life lessons. I believe that humor makes the message stick.  But some publishers do not like Christian humor . . . so sad, right?

I agree, Jane, that is very sad.

Do you have any scriptures you’d like to share that have inspired you?

Isaiah 40:31; They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

2 Timothy 1:7-The God hath not given me a spirit of fear but of love power and a sound mind.

Those are both rich, encouraging verses, especially in middle-age!

What would you like to tell us about your latest release, Rhinestones on My Flip-Flops?

I take a unique approach to Eve’s or “Deceived Eve’s” (as I like to call her) flip-flops.” I also use the struggles of totally stressed out “Domestic Diva Martha.” Does everything have to be perfect? NO! The book includes “Fearless Queen Esther’s” secret to amazing courage and I throw in modern WOW or Women of Wisdom advice so you too can discover your shine through other “women mentors.” This book is funny but very honest. I am a humorist and my comedy is on SiriusXM Radio and Pandora. I tell some honest (ouch) stories that I hope make you snort after a sniff.

Your work sounds wonderful. After all, laughter is the best medicine!

Thank you so much, Jane, for being my guest this week. Jane Jenkins Herlong is kindly giving away her book Rhinestones on My Flip-Flops to one randomly chosen commenter. Please leave a comment by the morning of next Monday, Oct. 2 to qualify. Thank you.

Jane you sound like a fun person with some fun reads. I’ve had people ask how we can laugh – like the time we drove up to the ticket booth and we’re told the last boat of the season was already pulling away. That was the 4th disaster of the day and crying would have made things worse. Honestly sometimes things are so bad they are funny don’t you think?

Delores, your comment makes me smile! Sometimes all you can do is find the funny side of things
and laugh or you will cry an awful lot! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today!

So true! Stress robs us of our joy and it can happen so quickly! The third chapter of my “Rhinestones” book addresses “domestic-Diva” Martha. She was so stressed that she was having a tough time enjoying her visit with Jesus.
